More than half a million traffic and parking tickets incurred before January 1, 2014 will qualify for reductions in fines if the motorist pays between February 22, 2016 and May 22, 2016. Despite the amnesty period motorists will still be responsible for a $45 dollar county fee and state surcharges of $88 for traffic violations and $10 for parking violations. Nassau County has stated the program “provides offenders an opportunity to pay their traffic and parking fines without affecting their credit.” Motorists eligible for the amnesty program will receive a phone call or letter indicating the reduced amounts.

It is important for motorists to know that Nassau County has a boot and tow program. Vehicles with three or more tickets can be booted and then towed if fines are not paid with 48 hours. The County uses an outside vendor who uses license plate scanning technology to find vehicles parked in public parking lots. Once a vehicle is booted there is a $166 booting fee. If a vehicle is towed there is a $125 fee plus the cost of storage.

Most traffic tickets are returnable to the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency located at 16 Cooper Street in Hempstead. Court is in session daily from 9a.m. to 11a.m. and 2p.m. to 4p.m. Monday through Friday and Wednesday evenings from 6p.m. to 7:30p.m.

It is important to note that many violations can lead to points on your license, increased insurance rates, and the suspension or revocation of your driving privileges. It is important to fight your violations with an experienced Nassau County Traffic Violations Lawyer. Many times we are able to reduce points or eliminate them entirely. No one should ever plead guilty to a traffic offense without consulting with a lawyer.
